I had to sleep on this one.
Mother Schmuckers – directed by Belgian brothers Lenny and Harpo Guit – finds two childish and stupid brothers in their twenties, Issachar and Zabulon, who lose their mother’s dog January Jack and must find him or else they’ll be kicked out.
Lenny and Harpo Guit look, act and make a film exactly how you think dudes named Lenny and Harpo Guit would. I don’t know how else to describe them. They make Mother Schmuckers like if the Safdie brothers watched nothing but Eric Andre for 3 weeks and then made a movie. Now I must stress, Mother Schmuckers is not as good as that hypothetical of the Safdies doing Eric Andre would be. The Safdies would crush that shit. But that’s the sort of vibe we got going here. The Guits have this kooky, shit-post kind of editing and shooting, reveling in lo-fi techniques. It doesn’t always hit, but when it does it sure does.
This movie starts with a dude eating grilled shit, and only tries to top itself from there. There’s a bestiality orgy and that’s not even top 5 of the darkest shit in this movie. It’s a wonder that it manages to feel so lightheartedly juvenile about all of it. Mathieu Amalric is somehow in this, and that’s somehow the most shocking thing in this film. If you’d rather not put yourself through this film, I get it. But man, I bet this film was fun as hell to make.
It’s dumb as shit, but it is committed to being dumb as shit. It makes no pretense about being something else other than incredibly dumb, and I admire it for that. It was kind of a relief to watch something absolutely stupid after a lot of the self-serious stuff in Sundance. Some shock jokes are certainly not as funny as others. But the ones that hit sure are funny. There are parts of this film where months from now I will think about them and just start laughing. And for what it’s worth, it at least has the courtesy to only be 70 minutes.
